Lucky Charms 11/11/08

  • Cubs C Geovany Soto won the NL Rookie of the Year award almost unanimously losing only one first place vote to Joey Votto. This was an obvious choice and he deserved to win. Soto batted .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs.
  • Tim Lincecum won the NL Cy Young. I am not very surprised. I had a feeling that Webb would win it and I had a little hope that some people were smart enough to see than Johan Santana was the best pitcher over the course of the year. You can look at my argument here. I hate the way the Cy Young is chosen. Lincecum had a great year and deserved second place but he wasn't as good or as valuable as Santana. If the Mets had a halfway decent bullpen, Santana would have been the near unanimous Cy Young.
  • Mike Piazza is writing a book about his time in baseball that is due out in 2010. I'm excited about this book. I love Piazza and would love to hear about his stories and his time in the majors with people like Pedro, Bobby V, and Ricky Henderson.
  • Matt Holliday was traded to the Okland A's which at first may not seem like it has an impact on the Mets. However this trade is very important to the Mets for two reasons. 1. The Phillies, who were rumored to be in the hunt, don't get Holliday. 2. Houston Street goes to the Rockies. The Rockies are rumored to want to trade Street which immediately puts the Mets in the discussion. I never really liked Street but he is a solid pitcher and if we can get him for Heilman, Evans, and a lower level prospect I may not be opposed to a trade.
  • The Nationals get Josh Willingham and Scott Olsen from the Marlins in exchange for 2B Emilio Bonifacio and minor leaguers RHP P.J. Dean and OF Jake Smolinski. Mike Jacobs was also traded a little while back to the Royals for Pitcher Leo Nunez. This allows the Marlins to move Uggla to 3b or 1b because of his terrible defense. The trade also still gives the Nationals a surplus of OF. Now they have Willingham, Elijah Dukes, Willy Harris, Lastings Milledge, Austin Kearns and Wily Mo Pena. The Mets and Nationals have made trades before (Ayala, Church, Milledge,etc.). The Nats declined Willy Mo's $5 million option but he exercised his $2 million option. It's not sure where he fits into the Nationals plans and is only 26 years old. He has MONSTER power and can be a poor man's Adam Dunn. I've always loved Willy Mo and think if he can be a very solid Major League player. I'd love it if the Mets traded for him because even if he doesn't pan out, he can still be a power bat off the bench. I don't see the Mets getting him and think they'd prefer Kearns.

Sabathia should have won the NL Cy Young. What he did for Milwaukee this year was unmatched.

i shudder to think what dan uggla would look like while playing 3B

i was gonna go out on a MAJOR limb and pick the marlins to win the east next year, but probably not anymore

also street is not worth aaron, evans, and a prospect. we could get him for a mid-level and a low-level prospect and even then i wouldnt make that deal because whenever i would watch him pitch last year it would be scary bad. just sign fuentes and focus on the other roles

how to fix aaron and schoenshit, prozac or a good shrink?

as for cy young, i think they got it right, what CC did was absolutely fantastic but the fact he only pitched half the year in the NL was the reason he didn't receive the votes from the writers, and timmy brandon johan was my order as well

cc would have won it if he pitched the whole year like he did the second half when he was in the nl. also theres no way in hell webb deserved it over johan. theres also no way lincecum did either

really? the marlins?? saying that you're going out on a major limb is an understatement.

I agree that the mets should just sign fuentes and keep their prospects.

rory you know webb should have won. he had the most wins.

i think that lincecum deserved the cy young because while santana had the bullpen always blowing his wins, lincecum did play for the giants

yea but Santana had a lower ERA and pitched under a ton more pressure than Linceucum. Santana also pitched the last month of the season injured (the month in which he won pitcher of the month award)

The Giants' bullpen blew seven wins for Lincecum so you can't use that as an excuse for Johan. Secondly, Lincecum won 25% of his teams' wins, so I would argue that he is more valuable than Johan. Also, Lincecum doesn't get to pitch against his Giants, one of the worst teams in the league, and Johan gets to pitch against the Nats at least 4 times. Lincecum also led the league in strikeouts. Although this stat is not as important as wins and era, people like dominance.

WINS ARE THE MOST OVERRATED STAT IN BASEBALL! They are not an accurate reflection of how well a pitcher pitched, rather a reflection of lucky a pitcher was on a given day (whether the bullpen/offense were good). Also your argument about pitching against the Nationals and Giants is not good because he only pitched against the Giants once and the Nationals 3 times. Lincecum on the other hand pitched against the Padres 6 times and the Nationals once. Santana also had to pitch against the Phillies 5 times under pressure. None of Lincecum's games carried the pressure that Santana's did. Yes Tim led the league in K's but that is not nearly as important as ERA. Santana was the best pitcher in the league hands down. He had to adjust to a new league, pitch under scrutiny and pressure, along with pitching through an injury for the last month of the season. He also pitched an absolute gem to keep the Mets' season alive on the second to last day on short rest.

Obviously, to win a baseball game, you need to outscore your opponent. 2 sides go into that: pitching and offense. Now, Lincecum did win more games (2) but had a higher ERA (.09). As rory argued, wins are overrated and only account for how "lucky the pitcher is." However, The giants on avg scored 1.5 less run a game than the mets, which is probably why the giants sucked and the mets almost made the play-offs. However, to win 18 games when your team scores so little is a sign of how great of a pitcher you are and how dominant your were. Wins can be overrated (i.e Colon winning the Cy Young over Rivera), but you need to look into the other factors that go into wins when judging their merit.
