Phillies and Ibanez Agree to Deal

The Phillies and Raul Ibanez agreed to a 3 year $30 million dollar deal today. I am actually not upset about this deal. While I am a fan of Ibanez and did want the Mets to possibly get him at the trade deadline last year, I did not want the Mets to get him this year. He is old and probably the worst left fielder in baseball. He is also a Type A free agent which means Phillies lose their first round pick to the Mariners as the Mets did to the Angels with K-Rod. This also means that the Mets have more of a reason to sign Adam Dunn. GET ADAM DUNN!! He's in his prime years, has a ton of power, and excellet OBP, isn't a type A free agent, and we can move him to 1b in 2010. With Dunn we could possibly have the best 1-5 line up in baseball to go along with our best 8th-9th inning duo of Putz and K-Rod.

Putz has no desire to be an 8th inning guy and may put a football move and hold out. Also, just thought you'd like to read this:

That makes Cole Hamels my new favorite player. Basically just told the mets and their fans to SUCK IT.
As for Ibanez, he cant be any worse of a LF than Burrell, and is def cheaper, so, its not a bad move, and they have bruntlett for the last inning defensive sub

No Ibanez is worse than Burrell as hard as that may be to believe. Putz has actually said that he is happy to be joining the Mets and K-Rod in the bullpen so he will not do what the ass hole football players do.

Burrell and Ibanez were the two worst left fielders in baseball last year actually. I read this on a Phillies blog about the Ibanez signing and couldn't agree more:

* it does nothing to solve one big problem (left field defense)
* it marginally improves a non-problem (hitting against righties)
* it significantly worsens the team with respect to a serious problem (hitting against lefties)
* it makes the team older
* it gives up a first-round draft pick

saves a bunch of money though, thats one of the positive things. That and pat gillick liked him, and pat gillick seems to know what he's doing

Doesn't matter if Pat Gillick knew what he was doing because he's not the Phillies GM, Rubén Amaro, Jr. is.
